fortune cookies?

December 21st, 2002

To commemorate the first appearance of Yao Ming in South Florida, those zany marketing types with the Miami Heat decided to give away fortune cookies with prize coupons inside.

Yao wasn’t too impressed.

“First of all, there’s no such thing as a fortune cookie in China,” he told reporters through his interpreter.

And then he scoffed at the size of the giveaway.

“I think fortune cookies are too small. I think you have to go a little bigger,’’ he said, suggesting barbecued pork.

Another article about this stupid marketing ploy

Apparently Yao wasn’t that insulted, according to an article in the Miami Herald because “he’s not necessarily familiar with American stereotypes of Chinese culture.”

Oh, and a quote from this article in the Miami Herald
‘’We did not find the promotion to be offensive,’’ Heat executive vice president Michael McCullough said.
