shaq v. yao…
January 15th, 2003
I rarely sign those online petitions, usually because I doubt they’ll accomplish much. But, none the less, I signed this one just a few minutes ago…
Shaq should apologize for racist comments
I’m number 260! Well, it’s up to 261 right now…
And, while you’re in a signing mood, why don’t you sign up for the Shaquille O’Neal Skool of Etiquette? With classes like “Art History 185: “Kazam” and the art of shitty movies,” who wouldn’t want to?
By the way, I received this in my inbox. And I deem it appropriate…
hi,
i am writing your group because i would like members here to help me achieve something. I am a student at Carnegie Mellon Unversity; my name is Jack Lin. I recently read an article here
http://www.asianweek.com/2003_01_03/sports_yaoming.html
on Shaq making racist comments about asian americans. What makes me angry is that he received the Young Leadership Award from NAACP and should be a role model for young black kids. I urge you all to call NAACP and/or email them to demand NAACP to withdraw Shaq’s Young Leadership Award. He needs to be held accountable for his words.
here’s the contact web page
http://www.naacp.org/contact/
I wrote to all 5 email addresses on there because the
washingtonbureau@naacpnet.org email bounced back. Here’s what i wrote to NAACP in addition to calling them, and I wish as many of you to do the same. And also post to other message boards to urge other people to contact NAACP as well. Together we can make something happen. Blacks did it in the 60’s. It’s time Asians stand up for ourselves.

Hi,
My name is Jack Lin; I am a student at Carnegie Mellon University. I was very disturbed by a story that i read recently.
I quote the story “In his most recent racial taunt of Yao Ming, Shaquille O?Neal told a reporter, ?Tell Yao Ming, ?ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh.?? “Here’s a link to the story.
http://www.asianweek.com/2003_01_03/sports_yaoming.htmlShaquille O’Neal, one who recently received the Young Leadership award from the NAACP, made such a racist remarks about another colored person. What does that teach the young black america about other colored people, specifically asian americans? It teaches them RACISM. Read this article below about Black students victimizing asian americans.
http://www.nydailynews.com/12-08-2002/news/story/41632p-39289c.htmlAs a recipient of a prestigious award from NAACP, Shaquille O’Neal should be held to higher standards. In his recent remarks, he is teaching black america that it is okay to be racist to asian americans. I am here to state that It Is Not Acceptable. I strongly urge NAACP to withdraw the Young Leadership Award from Shaquille O’Neal because he does not represent the ideals that NAACP stands for. Martin Luther King Jr. would have never approved Shaq’s words or to have him associated with NAACP. Those who died in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s did not fight and die for a racist like Shaquille O’Neal. Such award should be given to a candidate who holds much higher moral values than someone who makes racists remarks.
Sincerely,
Jack Lin
