last samurai
May 22nd, 2005
So, after months and months just sitting there on the bottom of my “to see” stack of DVDs, I finally lifted all that weight off the Last Samurai DVD and decided to see it. Not bad. Not bad at all. A bit condescending at times though. There are a lot of reviews out there, so let me just come out and ask a question.
Why doesn’t Tom Cruise die? In movies, that is. I mean, shit, every samurai died rushing towards gatling guns shooting 200 rounds a minute, except Tom who eventually waltzes back into the village without a limp.
He’s survived car crashes, speeding trains followed by maniacal helicopter pilots, jet-packed pre-crime officers, and a jet being shot down, and just when you think he bit the dust, we discover it was just some sort of out of body experience. (Fine, he does apparently bite the dust in this movie, but I haven’t seen it yet.)
Meanwhile, Samuel Jackson apparently dies in 90% of his films. And he doesn’t even get to make out with Katie Holmes. Lucky bastard.
