cut it out

A patron, distraught that a book he wanted wasn’t available in our library system, became more distraught after waiting several days to discover that the book wasn’t available for Interlibrary Loan as well.
He then decided to prove a point by cutting up his library card in front of me, saying it served no purpose for him.
I didn’t have the heart to tell him that he’ll be needing that card to login to our computers for Internet access starting in a few months. He’ll have a harder time accessing online dating sites without it.
Yeah, my days are getting more and more like this: I’ve been transferred back to the circulation department to help straighten things out.
