summer time, and the reading is easy…

June 27th, 2005

Ah, summer.

Hot temperatures, scorching sun, the increasingly annoying smell of suntan oil-covered tourists, and overzealous parents ordering a ton of books from their children’s summer reading lists. All of which, of course, is not on the shelf because of other overzealous parents ordering the same books.

And this year, for the first time, I myself am an overzealous parent.

It just dawned on me the other day while ordering books for Kindergarten and first graders that my daughter too will need to be reading those same titles. She’s beginning to read bits and pieces on her own right now, but mostly enjoys mommy or daddy reading to her. Of course, nothing on those reading lists are anything Disney-related, so I don’t know how she’ll take to them. I’ll probably be reading two books a night to her - one required book, and a Disney/Dr. Seuss book right before bed.

Sniff…before I know it, she’ll be required to read Shakespeare.
