what a week…
August 27th, 2005
Well, Thursday night proved to be quite a rush with strong winds, blackouts, and falling tree limbs. Quite a bit of debris in front of our house, but no major damage. Can’t say the same for others a couple of miles away from us who are suffering from heavy flooding and newly installed skylights.
We weren’t expecting Green Day to perform Friday night, but everytime we checked the website, there was no message of cancellation - just a brief statement that the show was still scheduled to take place.
And thank God it did. After a rough night like that, it was great to end the week with Green Day rocking the house.
We didn’t know who was going to open up, since there were no mention of it on any website. We were in line waiting for drinks when the opening act took stage, when it dawned on us it was none other than Jimmy Eat World. Crap, I knew we should’ve gotten there a little earlier.
After them and what appeared to be the longest wait ever, though it couldn’t have been longer than 15 minutes, Green Day jumped on stage and started off with American Idiot. Man, these guys give a great live show, with a lot of audience participation and a literally hot pyrotechnic show. At one point they picked three audience members to come on stage and play. They were looking for a drummer, a bass player, and a guitar player. After two unsuccessful auditions for a drummer, they finally found a guy who ran up on stage, tripped, and possibly sprained his leg. None the less, he sat down and started jamming away to the instructions of Tres Cool. Next they found a bass player successfully on their first try. Then they found an 11-year old redheaded kid to be the guitar player. They sucked, though they really rocked out. After a while, the real Green Day rocked the house again. BJ then pointed to the 11-year old with his guitar, told him he rocked, and that he gets to keep the guitar. Lucky.
They then rocked to a couple of old stuff, then some things off they’re new album. Then a cover of “Shout” and “Stand By Me”. They asked the crowd to put up their lighters or cell phones and did a kick-ass cover of Queen’s “We Are The Champion.” The whole arena lit up in blue with thousands of cell phones. It was freakin’ beautiful. BJ ended with “Good Riddance,” which was quite fitting - ‘cause we indeed had the time of our life.
